Obituary of Barbara Dupre

Barbara Barnhill DuPre of Columbia, SC, died on December 21 at National Healthcare, having bravely dealt with complications of a stroke she suffered in 2007. The memory of her beauty, wit, intellect and love for all creatures great and small cannot be dimmed by any illness. Barbara was born in Denmark, SC on May 7, 1941 to the late Clifford (Dick) Barnhill and Ida Lee (Zeigler) Barnhill. She attended school in Denmark where she excelled academically and was a beauty queen. After moving to Columbia, she graduated from Dreher High School in 1959. She attended the University of South Carolina. Barbara was a very talented businesswoman. During her career, she worked in public relations with Rogers, Newman and Cauthen and was a successful real estate agent and co-founder of DuPre Real Estate. She enjoyed a long and successful banking career with Standard Federal Saving and Loan, SC National Bank and Wachovia. She retired as Mortgage Underwriting Manager with AgFirst Bank in Columbia. Barbara was well known for her love of the printed word: studying history, biographies of the American Presidents, religions of the world, researching her family genealogy as early settlers in SC and learning anything and everything about animals. She is survived by her beloved son, Jay Melton DuPre of Columbia, his wife, Beverly and her one and only granddaughter, Danielle; her sister, Jacqueline Anthony of Charlotte, NC and Barnwell, SC and ?baby? sister, Joanne Whitlock of Columbia. She is also survived by nieces, Allison Dicks Forehand of Barnwell, Christy Whitlock Elwell of Columbia and nephews, Hamilton Dicks, IV of Barnwell and Justin Whitlock of Raleigh, NC. The family wishes to thank the staff of Hall 200 at NHC-Parklane who cared for, supported and comforted Barbara during her final months. She now joins her parents and her dachshund, Sassy, in a heavenly place. A private service is planned.
