Obituary of Christian Whitten

SPRINGDALE—Funeral services for Christian L. "Billy" Whitten, Jr., 79, of Springdale, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at Holland Avenue Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Charles Wilson and Jimmy Whitten. Burial will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Holland Avenue Baptist Church, 801 12th Street, Cayce, SC 29033 or Heartstrings Hospice, 115 Blarney Drive, Columbia, SC 29223. Mr. Whitten, beloved husband of Annie Godfrey Whitten, passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2012. Born in Lexington County, he was the son of the late C. L. Whitten and Nettie Chalmers Whitten. He was a member of Holland Avenue Baptist Church. He coached baseball in the Cayce / West Columbia area, winning the World Series in the Colt League in 1974. Surviving in addition to his wife of 56 years, Annie Whitten; daughter, Susan Worthy (Lester); sons, Chris Whitten (Erica) and Ron Whitten; six grandchildren, Brad Cooper, Blake Cooper, Brittany Harmon, Chrissie Whitten, Amanda Whitten and Hanna Whitten; thirteen great grandchildren; sisters, Doris Reeves (Herman), Nell Gainey, Vivian Shull (Carroll), Betty Morris (Randy) and Chris Thelen (Lee); brothers, Homer Whitten (Esther), James Whitten (Diane) and Bobby Whitten (Brenda). He was preceded in death by a son Christian L. Whitten III and his brothers, George, Earl and Wayne Whitten.
