My father was one of the most talented people I have ever known. By himself, he rebuilt the '63 Ford Custom which we thereafter took to Mount Rushmore and back and did the bodywork on his pickup truck. We all watched him do most everthing involved with building a house and he could have probably figured out the rest if need be. As a Master Electrician, he was one of the best bosses I ever had. He wound and lacquered his own fly rod, gave entertaining presentations to schoolchildren on weather forecasting, kept bees, talked easily with anyone, was a professional whatever his job and could draw an excellent likeness of a VW Beetle on a chalkboard (one of my earliest memories). My father enlisted in the Air Force hoping to be trained in airframe/powerplant but was sent to Weather School instead. He no doubt would have excelled in A/P but the only F-100 he ever got to work on was the above-mentioned pickup. I am proud that he served at Thule AFB and entered the Order of the Blue Nose. And I resent to this day the Air Force doing itself and my father the dishonor of cheating him out of his A1C and mustering him out of the service. The USAF obviously never knew what a resource they had in him, but such is life. Stanley Smith was a remarkable man whom I recall with pride and sympathy. I will always rather remember him as he was before we left Vermont, when we were all young.
