Obituary of Doris Lyle Sherrill

CHAPIN— A celebration of life for Mrs. Doris "Dot" Lyle Sherrill, 95, of Chapin, SC will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel of Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209. The family will receive friends one hour prior at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Born in Winder, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Casie and Willie Lyle. She is survived by a son, Gerald "Jerry" Thomas Sherrill (Linda) and daughter-in-law, Cheryl Hartley Sherrill (Wayne); 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Doris was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Homer Lee "Pappy" Sherrill; daughter, Carol Lee Sherrill Dilley; son, Wayne Irvin Sherrill, sister, Corinne Lyle Herring; and brother, Clarence Lyle, as well as a grandson, Wayne O'Brian Sherrill. A charter member of both Bayview Baptist Church and Chapin Baptist Church, she remained very close to both of her church families. Doris always expressed a deep love of nature and reveled in the beauty of God's creatures. She had a gift of growing flowers and was proud of gardening at her family home. Doris was an avid reader with a never ending thirst for knowledge of science and current events. She enjoyed reading The State newspaper and listening to the daily local and national news. Those who had the pleasure of knowing her enjoyed her gracious, yet quick wit. When asked about her 95 years, she said her long-lived life was a blessing from God above. A woman of beauty, she always spoke honestly, openly and with compassion and love. Doris adored her family and always placed their needs before her own. Some of Doris' fondest memories included traveling to musical events with her husband, a renowned traditional country fiddler. She was most proud of his performances at the Joffrey Ballet and Carnegie Hall. She was also proud of her daughter's and sons' musical talents and though she never touted it, she played a bit herself on her guitar, ukulele and keyboard. The family wishes to thank those who provided loving and compassionate care during Mrs. Sherrill's illness. A special thank you is expressed to Pam Riley with NHC and Margaret Alston with Caris Hospice. The family wishes to suggest memorials to Chapin Baptist Church, 950 Old Lexington Highway, Chapin, SC 29036.
