Obituary of Shelton Owens Baston

LEXINGTON - Funeral services for Shelton Owens Baston, 89, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 5, 2014 at Thompson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, December 4, 2014 at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Mr. Baston passed away peacefully at home on December 1, 2014. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late, Shelton H. Baston and Helen Sawyer Baston. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Shirley Williams Baston, brothers Obed Baston, Orean Baston, and Odell Baston, and sister Opal Baston Stephenson. After serving in the Army Air Forces during World War II, he enjoyed a long career with Southern Bell Telephone Company in Columbia, having retired in 1982. He was a charter member of Edwards Memorial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Cayce. He was a loving grandfather (dubbed "Can Can Baston" by granddaughter Kerri), and enjoyed time with his grandchildren during his many years in retirement. He also greatly enjoyed vegetable and fruit gardening, and being a devoted Chet Atkins fan, he thoroughly enjoyed Bluegrass music and guitar music, having instilled a love of guitar in his family. Surviving are sons, Steve Baston and wife Iris, Stan Baston and wife Cil; four grandchildren, Kerri Baston Ray (Matt), Matt Baston (Lauren), Kimberly Baston Walsh (Tom), and Nathan Baston; as well as four great grandchildren, Case, Tanner, Quintin Ray and Little Miss Ryan Baston.
