Obituary of Shirley Ann Smith

A life celebration service for Shirley Haygood Smith, of Columbia, will be held at Southeast Community Church, 1540 Elmtree Rd., Columbia, SC 29209 at 6:30pm. Friday, March 13, 2015. Pastor Robert Morgan will officiate. The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service at 6:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Simple Ministries, PO Box 1225 Columbia, SC 29202 or at www.provesimple.com. Ms. Shirley passed away on March 5, 2015. Born in Atlanta GA, she was the daughter of the late, J. B. Haygood and Ruth Haygood Collins. Shirley had unwavering Christian faith and lived her life accordingly. She created a home for her husband, children and grandchildren that was full of love, commitment and strong family structure. Family gatherings and family meals were by far her most favorite times and were always filled with laughter, storytelling and her famous mac & cheese. Shirley also lived to serve others. She dedicated most of the years of her life to serving and teaching in the church. From nursery to students to women groups or from set-up to clean-up, no area of service was too big or too small and she always wished she could do more. Most recently, Shirley devoted several hours a week serving two area food pantries, Southeast Community Church and Rosewood Baptist. Shirley enjoyed reading, family vacations, road trips, cruises, and more reading. Surviving are her husband of 51 years, George Franklin "Frank" Smith of Columbia, SC, daughters; Susan L Smith and Linda S Roberts; grandchildren; Jennifer Smith, Michael Smith, Nikki Roberts, and Hope Roberts; and many nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her father; J.B. Haygood, her mother; Ruth Haygood Collins and her brothers; Michael C. Haygood and Danny Haygood. Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park is assisting the family.
