The loss of a brother is unthinkable. Doug lit up the room when he walked in, and more likely than not, sold you piece of furniture before he left.....Brash, confident, and the #3 knucklehead in the four brothers.....
he will be greatly missed......

I will always remember the fun our Bible Study group had when the house was opened for socials. He also famously accused Gary (my husband) of being blind when he was cheering the wrong girl during a basketball game both our daughters were playing. He was then informed Gary was legally blind and they laughed their way into a friendship. Gayle Messer

Doug and I have been best friends for 50 plus years. Doug has left me with many great childhood and adult memories. I wanted to share one of those with his family and friends.
Doug and I went swimming at Sesqui State Park. Being in our early teens, of course we were thin and trim, and very active. Doug was quite an accomplished swimmer as his medals and ribbons were proudly displayed on his mother's mantel. Doug loved to do the Butterfly Stroke, which he tried to teach me to no avail.
After a few hours of being in the water, we decided to take a break and just walk around. We both had worked up a ravenous appetite. We happened upon a group of elderly ladies surrounding one of the many picnic tables at Sesqui, and this one particular table had a beautiful spread of fried chicken, rice, gravy, rolls and all of the fixins. Of course we stopped, Doug crossed his arms, turned out his right foot at about a 45 degree angle (I always considered that stance, to be one of Doug's trademarks), he stared at all of the food on the table for more than a few seconds, I don't know what the elderly ladies were thinking seeing us just standing there, then Doug pipes, "can we have some food, we're starving"? One of the ladies responded "yes, but we're going for a walk right now, I will fix ya'll a plate when we come back". Of course Doug and I did not venture away from the table. When they returned, the elderly lady , true to her word, fixed Doug and I both gracious plates of fried chicken, rice and gravy, and all of the fixins. We ate until we were full, thanked them and we both agreed that it was one of the best meals that we had ever eaten. To this day it is still one of the most memorable meals that I have ever eaten. If it hadn't been for Doug asking for food, we would not have eaten, because we didn't have any money! Thanks for the meal Doug and thanks for all of the great memories we've shared.I'm gonna miss you much! Rest in Peace brother! Love you....Steve
