Was saddened to learn of Coach Chitty’s passing. I fondly remember the time spent on the practice fields at Airport High under his coaching. His manner and way with people made a lifelong impact on me; a true southern gentleman. Through the years our paths crossed with his election to the Lex2 School Board and our mutual interest in Newberry College. We’ve lost a good one! Pat G. Smith

Dear Mrs. Chitty and all Jerry’s family:
I had the pleasure of seeing Jerry play at Denmark-Olar High School “back in the day.” He had such a skillful soft jumper—the arc from Jerry’s hands to the swoosh was a sight to behold. Later I understand he continued his artistry in his professional life. No less than John Steinbeck opined: “I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit."
Rhoda and I saw the notice of Jerry’s demise only late Sunday in The State. We were away for the weekend. We extend condolences to all Jerry’s family but hope for you and yours the many joys and successes in Jerry’s life and memorable together experiences will help soften the grief at this time of his loss.

Betsy and family,
Jerry has been a true friend. He taught with my mom in Bamberg. Then we came to Lex 2 and our paths crossed many times. I always looked up to his wisdom. Then I changed jobs but saw him many times at football games and events at Newberry College. I knew Betsy was a CC alum and I think my mom taught you. And Jerry added one of my favorite students to his family. Trey was
So kind to give his sweat bands to my son when he ran out on the field after a game. You made him feel special
Wanted all of you to have my sympathy for a great and special person in my life

Dear Chitty Family,
I am so sorry here that he has passed away. He was my principal at Saluda River Elementary. I have very fond memories of his kindness to everyone especially to my family. I ran into him a few years ago and he had not seen me in 30 plus years and I asked him if he recognized me and he called me by name. Then named off my 5 other siblings. I was impressed to say the least. Keeping y’all in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Betsy and all of the Chitty family....I find myself struggling to find the words to express my feelings about Jerry, but let me try. Coach Chitty was a man that gave and gave...always positively supporting everyone around him. Back in 1967 until 1969, he was my coach, but more than that; he gave me a foundation that has helped guide me throughout my life in so many ways. After practices Jerry would remove his coach's hat and play 3 on 3 with us. I don't think I can remember him ever getting mad ...instead he just encouraged us to do better when we weren't playing our best. A teacher ? You bet he was ! Jerry Chitty was one of a kind and a model for so many young people....people like me.

Mrs. Betsy and family, my heart hurt when I read about the passing of "Coach" Chitty! Although it has been many years since he coached me on the basketball court at W-E High School, I still have fond memories of those days. He took an interest of all his guys (especially me since i was a "southpaw" like himself. Just kidding of course)!! He cared about ALL of us. My utmost condolences to you and the family during this time of grieving!
With sympathy,
Wayne Crow

Dear Betsy, Scott, Liz & families, we send you our love & prayers. Bruce & I both loved Jerry. THE Coach Chitty of our youth; as did all of his students & players at Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School. He always made you feel special, he encouraged, he motivated, & he gave tough love when needed ( to Bruce of course, not me). He was our favorite teacher, coach, & principal & then a treasured friend. But his passion for sports & the love, enthusiasm, & inspiration he gave to his players was how I remember him best. He was just special. Everyone I know loved Jerry. No matter his many accomplishments & levels of success, what better legacy can you leave than that?
Our hearts are hurting for you & our hearts hurt with you. May our prayers surround you with comfort & a little of the love he always gave to us. In sympathy & love, Bruce & Beth Ellis

What a wonderful gentleman, teacher, leader, and encouraging educator! As a young teacher, Mr. Chitty encouraged me to pursue administrative interests in Lexington Two. He not only encouraged, but supported. Mr. Chitty was a terrific mentor for me, as well as so many other teachers. There are so many children and teachers who were impacted positively by Mr. Chitty.
Condolences to the family. Liz, you, your Mom, brother, and family are in our thoughts and prayers.
