Obituary of John Carl Spires

John Colquitt "Carl" Spires CAYCE—Funeral services for John Colquitt "Carl" Spires, 72, of Cayce, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Dunn's Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Tom Atten. Burial will follow in Dunn's Chapel Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6-8 at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Mr. Spires, beloved husband of Helen Welch Spires, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2011. Born in Cayce, he was the son of the late Arthur Drayton Spires and Sarah Frazier Spires. He was an insurance agent with Life of Virginia for over twenty years and retired from SC Department of Corrections, where he was the Recycling Coordinator. He served nine years in the Army National Guard, two terms on Lexington County Council and twenty years on the Central Midlands Regional Planning Council and was a member of the Cayce Masonic Lodge No. 384AFM. Surviving in addition to his wife, Helen Welch Spires of Cayce, are daughter, Sally Amanda "Mandy" Spires of West Columbia; sons, John C. Spires, Jr. of West Columbia and Jeffrey C. Spires of Cayce; sisters, Marjorie Helen Spires McNair of Columbia, Kathryn Louise Spires Burkett of Lexington; four grandchildren, Amanda Jean Huff, Colby Austin Spires, Drayton Andrew Spires, and Bennett Alexander Spires, all of West Columbia. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Carroll Drayton Spires and a brother, James Frederick "Fred" Spires. The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at National Healthcare on Parklane Road for their compassionate care of Carl and his family.
