Obituary of Faye Smith

Faye Arant Smith LEXINGTON: Services celebrating the life of Faye A. Smith, 78, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 21, 2011, at St. David's Lutheran Church, officiated by The Rev. James Laurence. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Mark Smith, Mike Smith, Michael "Bunky" Smith, Roger Backman, Sr., Roger Backman, Jr., and Terry Mallard. Honorary pallbearers will be Brendan Backman and Marshall Smith. Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. this evening (Wednesday) at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais St., Ste. 300, Columbia, SC 29201 or to the American Lung Association, 1817 Gadsden St., Columbia, SC 29201. Faye went to be with her Lord on Monday, July 18, 2011. She was born and raised in Columbia, SC, a daughter of the late Maxey Lee Arant and Edna Rast Arant. She attended B.C. High School, but was a proud graduate of Lexington High School, completing her diploma in 1993 at age 61, along with her youngest daughter, Tiffany. Most commonly known by friends and family as Mama, Nana, or Granny, Faye truly possessed a servant's heart. She cared for those around her, especially her late husband M.C. and their four children, Linda Backman (Roger), Mark Smith, Mike Smith (Cindy), and Tiffany Smith; five grandchildren, Jennifer McPherson (Chris), Roger Backman, Jr. (Amanda), Rebecca Burriss (Ben), and Michael "Bunky" Smith; also five great-grandchildren, Taylor Backman, Brendan Backman, Mackayla Backman, Makensey McPherson, and Kate McPherson. She had a smile that could light up a room and the sound of her laughter warmed the hearts of all who heard it. There was no one quite like her. She was truly, "our sunshine."
