Obituary of John Merritt

John W. Merritt, Sr. CAYCE: Memorial service for John W. Merritt, Sr., 79, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 28, 2011, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by Rev. Michael Henderson. Mr. Merritt died Tuesday, October 25, 2011. Born in Darlington, SC, he was a son of the late Preston Bennett Merritt and Pearl Olivia Weaver Merritt. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Korean War. He had worked with Darlington Mill from 1954-1956 and Columbia Olympia Mills, from 1956-1983; he ten was employed with Dreher High School, Richland County District 1, retiring in 1994. Mr. Merritt enjoyed life and his grandchildren; he had many health battles and was a survivor to the end. He was loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Barbara June Merritt; son, John W. Merritt, Jr. (Janet) of Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren, John W. Merritt, III of Charlotte, NC, and Emily C. Merritt of Minneapolis, MN; nieces and nephews, Rock William (Becky) of Florence, June Levesque (Roland) of Beaufort and Bridgett William Lawson (Marvin) of Darlington; dear friends, Dean and Billy.
