Obituary of Betty Gillis Shorter

Betty (Gaines) Gillis Shorter, 84, passed away, Monday, October 22, 2012, at Providence Hospital. She was the baby of twelve siblings, and was the beloved wife of Asbury Coke Shorter. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two loving sons, Joe J. Gillis and his wife Mary Beth, and James Vaughn Gillis. She is also survived be an older and last surviving sister, Lula Brown of Anderson. Betty was the daughter of the late, Strawder Lawrence and Marven Adams Gaines. Raised in Elberton, GA, Mrs. Shorter moved to Columbia in 1953 and has lived here her entire adult life. Betty was a model, fashion consultant, and worked in Retail Clothing sales for many years. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 11:00 A.M., in Greenlawn Memorial Park, 7100 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC 29209, with Pastor Larry Long formerly of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church officiating.
