Obituary of John Joseph Chapiesky
John Joseph Chapiesky, Sr., age 94, died Sunday, February 18, 2018 peacefully at his home in West Columbia.
John was born on June 14, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of the late Victor and Amanda Chapiesky. He served with the 7th Armored Division in WWII as a Master Staff Sergeant. He was injured during battle and decorated with a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After his service he was employed by Kline Iron and Steel Co. as a Draftsman, Steel Detailer and Salesman until his retirement.
John was also active with St. Peter's Catholic Church, The Alston Wilkes Society, Columbia Toastmaster's, and The Sandy Run Hunting Club for many years.
John married Kathleen Shull from West Columbia in 1945. The two were married until Kathleen's death in 2005. John married Marie Hill in 2009 and the two were together until her death in 2014.
John was a friend to all and a true family man. He was devoted to his wives, children, and grandchildren.
John is survived by his sons, Joey (Sandy) Chapiesky, Chip (Tracy) Chapiesky, David (Lori) Chapiesky of West Columbia; and daughter, Mary Chapiesky (Hal) Beard of Lexington; grandchildren, Kimberly (Schon) Lewis, Garren (Michelle) Chambers, Jake (Katie) Chapiesky, Jared Beard, Caleb (Rachel) Chapiesky, Lauren Beard (Anthony) Uttke, Adam Chapiesky, Ashlyn Chapiesky, Paula Geddings, Tony Brazell; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
John donated his body to The Medical University of South Carolina. Visitation with family members will be held from 6-8 pm Wednesday, February 21 at Thompson's Funeral Home in Lexington. A memorial service will be held at Thompson's Funeral Home in Lexington at 4:00 pm Thursday, February 22nd. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to The American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, St. Peter's Catholic Church or charity of your choice.
