Obituary of Benjamin Hawkins

HAWKINS, Benjamin NORTH CHARLESTON - Benjamin David Hawkins, 24, of Charleston, SC, beloved son of Laura Wall (formerly Hawkins) died over the Memorial Day week-end. He was born June 23, 1981, in Columbia, SC. Ben was employed by Alutiiq; and was working in New Orleans to help rebuild the city following the devastation of hurricane Katrina. Prior to his employment with Alutiiq, Ben attended Trident Technical College on a full merit scholarship. While attending Fort Dorchester High School, Ben was awarded the Yale Science & Engineering Association Award from Yale University. As quarterback, he set a school record with a 75 yard TD pass against Berkeley High School. In the Citadel Summer Camp program which he attended for six years, Ben was awarded the Mark Clark Award; Wrestling, Sailing and Jr. Olympic NRA Sharpshooter I Marksmanship awards. Ben was gifted with intelligence, physical grace and a sweet loving heart. He had many lifelong friends. He will be deeply missed by his mother; grandmother, Doris Fox Wall; loving companion, Emile` Garcia; aunts, uncles and cousins. He is also survived by his father, Glen David Hawkins, and grandfather, Paul Hawkins, Sr., of Charleston. Ben was preceded in death by his grandfather, Major Troy Daniel Wall and grandmother, Catherine Alexandria (Alice) Hawkins. Funeral service for Benjamin David Hawkins, 24, will be held 2pm Friday, June 9, 2006, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by Rev. Dr. Donald West.
