Obituary of CSM D. Cassidy

CSM Mac D. Cassidy, Sr., US Army (Retired), Veteran of Three Wars, passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2011. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy E. Cassidy. A veteran of World War II, Korean Conflict and Vietnam, the Command Sgt. Maj. was called to active duty with Co E 121st Inf Georgia National Guard on September 16, 1940, having enlisted in the unit of 7 February, 1940. He began his Army Career in September 1940 at Ft. Jackson, SC. During World War II he fought in Germany and France with the 121st Inf. 7th Div. He received two Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars in that war. He was also in the Korean Conflict and two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a well-decorated soldier. His medals include: Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service, Army Commendation with one Silver and one Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart with Cluster, Army Good Conduct (9th Award), American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African ? Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Korean Service Star, Armed Force Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service with three Stars, United Nations Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Sixty Device, Presidential Unit Citation, and Meritorious Unit Commendation. After retiring from the Army in 1972, he went to work at the US Postal Service, retiring from there in 1990 after 17 ½ years. He was born in Greenville County, SC, the son of the late John J. Cassidy and Dora Keel Cassidy. A member of American Legion Post #6, VFW Post 641, Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 402, Life Member of Combat Inf Badge Association, and a Charter Member of Christ the King Lutheran Church. He is survived by his children: daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Christopher Pearson of Columbia, SC; son and daughter-in-law, James M. and Susan Cassidy of West Columbia, SC; son, Mac D. Cassidy, Jr. of Charleston, SC; five grandchildren: Artana, Lynn, Jami, Jill and Christopher; six great-grandchildren: Cassidy, Seth, Brooke, Peyton, Ethan and Keaton, whom he dearly loved; sisters, Evelyn Walker of Brunswick, GA, Ruth Vincent of Brunswick, GA, Rita Ricks of Snellville, GA; and a brother, David Cassidy of Brunswick, GA. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Monday, June 20, 2011 in the Chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road Columbia, SC 29209, with burial to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2pm until the hour of the service for visitation. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Unit 120 of the CM Tucker Center, and to Tri-County Hospice for the loving care they provided to Mr. Cassidy.
