Obituary of Joyce Cockrell

Joyce R. Cockrell CAYCE—Funeral services for Joyce R. Cockrell, 79, of Cayce, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at State Street Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Dr. Pete Cassidy and Rev. Dr. Steve Cloud. Burial will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday evening at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. "Sam" Cockrell, passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2011. Born in Saluda County, she was the daughter of the late Bruce and Daisy Hawkins Rodgers. She was a lifelong area resident, a former member of State Street Baptist Church, and a current member of Northside Baptist Church. She retired from the Department of Natural Resources after 23 years of devoted service. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, mother-in-law, and friend. The joy and pride of her life were her family and friends. Joyce expressed her sacrificial love through selfless hard work, kindness, great cooking, compassion, and always seeing the best in others. Surviving are daughter, Jan Burt (Mark) of Cayce; sons, Mike Cockrell (Jenny) of Greenville and Glenn Cockrell (Jan) of Greer; seven wonderful grandchildren, Brandon, Matthew, Rebekah Cockrell, and Ryan, Patrick, and Parker Burt, and Ashley Cockrell Sudman; sisters, Hilda Stoudemayer, Vesta Griffith, Barbara Wilson, and Gloria Duffie, all of Saluda. She was predeceased by her husband, F.A. "Sam" Cockrell, two sisters, Hazel Caughman, and Myrtle Koon, and two brothers, Lawton Rodgers and Mark Rodgers.
