Obituary of Elmer Sercy

Graveside Services for Elmer W. Sercy, 93, of Columbia will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, December 31, 2011 in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of the service at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road Columbia, SC 29209. Mr. Sercy passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2011. He was born May 31, 1918 in Angier, NC to the late Dalmer D. Sercy and Ellie Rawls Sercy Blackwell. Mr. Sercy came to Fort Jackson from Durham, NC in 1940 with his National Guard Unit. He was a WWII veteran who participated in the Normandy invasion, followed by campaigns in Northern France and Rhineland. He served with the 30th Infantry Division and was the Supply Sergeant for Company D 120th Regiment. Mr. Sercy was awarded a number of campaign medals and was a Bronze Star recipient. After the war, he remained in Columbia and was employed by Westinghouse as an electrical supply salesman for over forty years until his retirement. He was a lifelong member of The Lutheran Church of the Incarnation where he was a member of The Couples Class and Happy Wanderers. Mr. Sercy is survived by his sons, E. Wray Sercy, Jr. (Loretta) and Dalmer P. Sercy (Judy) both of Columbia, SC; his grandsons, who he was particularly proud of: Christopher Scott Sercy, New York, New York; Kenneth Andrew Sercy, Durham, NC; and Patrick Dalmer Sercy (Corey), Simpsonville, SC. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 48 years, Martha Whitworth Sercy and his dear friend Estelle Boulware. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff and residents of the Rice Estate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Lutheran Church of the Incarnation Building Fund, 3005 Devine Street Columbia, SC 29205.
