I became the Lavender family?s neighbor when I was 5 years old. Consisting of the Lavenders, Pettits and Zacharys, my new, expanded family began. The latch to Ruth?s house was always unlocked, especially to the neighborhood children. She always had a snack or cookies for us when we came to call. She was an excellent cook and shared her recipes with us to pass on to our children. When she mailed goodies to Chance in Viet Nam, all the airmen couldn?t wait for him to open his box! I have treasured memories of our vacations together in the North Georgia mountains, the Carolina beaches, Charleston, and Underground Atlanta. Even after I moved to Atlanta, I kept the road hot between Columbia and Atlanta. I am thankful for all of her life-time stories. Even at age 96, she told me remembrances of her childhood and World War II. She always put others first, and I will forever miss my ?other mother.?

Ruth was a big part of my fond memories of Oakview Road and even though she didn't live on the street, we felt like she was one of the family. When Mother died, she brought Daddy food every week and even left it hanging on the door if he wasn't home. He loved getting it and we appreciated her bringing him some her good cooking. She will be missed, but I'll bet they are having a great reunion in heaven now.

Ruth was a wonderful family friend. We had so many good times with her and the neighborhood gang at the beach and in the mtns.--the Clarks, the Pettits, the Zacharys.... When we walked up the hill one night in the mtns. and saw a house on fire, she ran really fast down the hill, packed up ready to leave before "We got cut off." Ruth never aged--she looked the same to me all of my life. When my son, John first met her, he started calling her "Nice Miss Ruth". Ruth was fun and the best cook! I did try some of her recipes but didn't have her touch. To the family, we will miss Ruth as well. We always considered her as family, too.
