Obituary of Wayne Sherrill

WEST COLUMBIA—Wayne I. Sherrill, beloved son, husband, father and grandfather passed away Friday, April 13, 2012. Born in Columbia, SC, he was a son of Doris M. "Dot" Lyle and the late Homer L. "Pappy" Sherrill. He served in the U.S. Air Force and retired from Westinghouse after serving for many years as an engineer. He was a Master Mason. He was a dedicated servant of the Lord who served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and Youth leader during his nearly lifelong membership at Bayview Baptist Church of Columbia. His faith in Christ touched many as he demonstrated the love of Jesus throughout his lifetime. Wayne was an avid bluegrass musician who carried on the musical traditions established by his beloved father, Pappy. He played the guitar, banjo and fiddle. Many Friday nights were spent fellowshipping and enjoying bluegrass music in his barn. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He was an avid sports fan and supported the University of South Carolina Gamecocks and Atlanta Braves. He is survived by mother, Dot Lyle Sherrill; wife, Cheryl Harley Sherrill; daughters, Lisa Sherrill (Brandon) and Patricia Hanna (Glen); granddaughters, Lauren and Lacie Hanna and Madison Stork; brother, Jerry Sherrill (Linda) and many other family members and close friends. He was predeceased by his father, Homer "Pappy" Sherrill, first wife, Sandra Harrelson Sherrill, infant son, Wayne O'Brian Sherrill and sister, Carol Sherrill Dilley. The family will receive friends at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington on Monday evening, April 16, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Northside Baptist Church in Lexington, SC on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia, SC. The family request that memorials be made to a charity of their choice.
