Obituary of Dorothy Shumpert

Dorothy Mae Shumpert GASTON: Funeral service for Dorothy Mae Shumpert, 70, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 6, 2012, at Bethany Lutheran Church, officiated by Rev. W. Osborne Herlong, Jr. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Casey Bradwell, John Wilson, Steve Brewer, Mark Langston, J.E. Lucas, Kenny Lucas and Mark Call. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais St., Suite 300, Columbia, SC 29201. Mrs. Shumpert, widow of Clausen "Shump" M. Shumpert, after 51 years of marriage, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 2, 2012. Born in Columbia, SC, she was a daughter of the late Ernest Martin and Teenie Ray Martin Atkinson. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. Mrs. Shumpert was a most caring, loving mother, grandmother, and sister, her family meant everything to her. She was a woman of God. She enjoyed working in her yard and reading. Survivors are: her daughter, Deborah Mae Roen of Williamston; son, Jonathan Shumpert (Amy) of Gaston; sisters, Barbara Jean Blackwell of Cayce, Shirley Ashmore (John) of Sumter, Sylvia Lucas (Johnny) of South Congaree, and Doris Strickland of Ridgeway; brother, Albert Myers of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Jamie, David, Brandon, Burley, Jessica, Desiree and Lillian; and five great grandchildren, Lina, Claire, Joshua, Leeanna and Isabella; also numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Shumpert was preceded in death by her son, Marshall Shumpert and sister, Mary Lou Parmenter and a brother, Ernest Martin, Jr.
