Obituary of Mary Portwood

WEST COLUMBIA: Funeral services for Mary Sally Portwood, 83, will be held at 1 p. m. Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at Trinity United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Phil Lavender. Interment will follow at Woodridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1201 Mohawk Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169. Mrs. Portwood, widow of Pierce B. Portwood, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2012. Born in Kite, GA, she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Mozelle Kniphfer. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, the "Happy Quilters" and the "Busbee Circle" ladies groups. Mrs. Portwood enjoyed fishing and camping. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister and friend. Survivors are: sons, Wayne A. Portwood (Kathy) and Jeffrey B. Portwood (Faye Corraro) of West Columbia and Tony M. Portwood (Teresa) of Chapin; sisters, Irene Parish (Bobby) of Aiken, Maggie Marsh (Junior) of Hephzibah, GA and June Ramsey of Louisville, GA; brothers, Otis Kniphfer (Mary-Anne) of Ridge Spring and James Kniphfer (Kelly) of Aiken; four grandchildren, Chris Portwood, Michael Portwood, Amber Nichole Portwood and Tony Portwood; two great grandchildren, Larry Cole and Ethan Bentley Portwood. Mrs. Portwood was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Kniphfer. The family would like to give special thanks to Mrs. Portwood's neighbors, especially, Nell Scott, and to Joetta Bumgarner and staff of Palmetto Hospice, caregivers: Mary Ann Eleazer, Tina Felder, and Joann Colson, and the Lexington County Council on Aging for all their loving care and dedication to our mother.
