Obituary of Boykin Rose

Boykin Kershaw Rose, Jr., 86, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 31, 2012 in Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel with Navy honors and interment to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Funeral Home. On-line condolences may be sent to www.greenlawn-columbia.com. Born to Boykin and Almena Alice Byrd Rose on September 3, 1925, of Blaney, SC (now Elgin, SC), he earned degrees in Electrical Engineering and Naval Science from the University of South Carolina. As a Navy officer, he proudly served in World War II and the Korean War. He also earned the designation of P.E. (Professional Engineer). As valedictorian from Blaney High School, he was a talented baseball player as a shortstop. He was a founding member of Spring Valley Baptist Church. He was also a member of I.E.E.E., Eastover Hunting and Fishing Club, and Ducks Unlimited. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. He was a hobby farmer in his spare time and earned the designation of Master Farmer from the Clemson Extension Service. He began his engineering career at Carolina Power and Light Company in Raleigh, NC. He also worked for the City of Camden, SC, and as an Engineering Technology instructor at Florence Darlington Technical College. He retired from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control in 1990. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Mary Virginia Whitaker Rose; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Alice and Carter Edmonds; son, Robert Boykin Rose; grandsons, Bruce Carter "Trey" Edmonds, III, and David Whitaker "Whit" Edmonds; also sisters-in-law, Loubie Harrington (Luke), Linda Rose; brothers- in-law, Jon Whitaker (Debbie), Robert Whitaker and Roy Shaw (Sarah). He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Joyce Rose Shaw; brother, Farrell Byrd Rose; and brother-in-law, Halford "Buddy" Whitaker, M.D. Pallbearers will be Lee Shaw, Alan Rose, Bob Esslinger, Trey Edmonds, Carter Edmonds and Robert Rose. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Way Sunday School class at Spring Valley Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Spring Valley Baptist Church or the church of your choice.
