Obituary of COL. B. ZEIGLER

Celebration of Life Service for Col. William B. Zeigler, Sr., U.S. Army (Retired), 94, will be held Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. in Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel, 845 Leesburg Road Columbia, SC 29209. Memorials may be made to Clemson Heritage Gardens of the Botanical Gardens at Clemson, SC, or Rose Hill Presbyterian Church, Columbia, SC. Friends are invited to join the family at 3130 Oakview Road Columbia following the service. Col. Zeigler died July 14, 2012. Born in Florence, SC, he was the fourth and youngest child of the late John A. Zeigler and Virginia Elfe Zeigler. He was a graduate of Florence High School and the great Class of 1939 of Clemson College where he received a BS in Industrial Education a commission as 2nd Lt. Army Reserve. He was a member of the Senior Platoon and Annual (TAPS) staff. He was secretary of the Heritage Garden Committee at Clemson University. He was employed by the Florence Evening Star, the Veterans Administration, the South Carolina Inspection & Rating Bureau and then for 30 years with the Home Ins. Co. of New York where he ended his insurance career in Columbia as State Manager. He was past president of the South Carolina Insurance Field Men?s Association and past Most Loyal Gander of the Palmetto Pond of the Honorable Order of the Blue Goose International. He received the 1979 company Representative of the Year award presented by the South Carolina Independent Agents Association. He was also on active duty for four and ½ years with the Army Air Corps serving as S1 in charge of personnel and Commanding Officer of Administrative Squadron, Adjutant Director of Personnel and Administration, Executive Officers Pathfinders Squadron. He continued in the Army Reserve for a total of 30 years attaining the rank of Colonel with his last assignment as Commandant of the Columbia U.S. Army Reserve School. Awards included American Defense Ribbon (pre Pearl Harbor), American Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was a life member of the Reserve Officers Association and past Most Loyal Gander of the Honorable Order of Blue Goose International, member of Fort Jackson Golf Club, Al?s Palmetto Golfers, and past member of the Retired Officers Association and the Military Order of the World Wars. He was an active member of Rose Hill and Covenant Presbyterian (PCA) Churches serving as Deacon and Ruling Elder in both churches and taught Sunday School, served as Sunday School Superintendent, and Mission Chairman at Rose Hill (PCA). He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Columbia Golden K, SC, where he served as secretary for four years and then President and received the Hixon Award. Surviving is his wife of 70 years, Margaret Gandy Zeigler of Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Z. (Peggy) and David R. Dodds of Columbia, daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Z. and R. Dean Gladden of Rock Hill, son and daughter-in-law, William B. Zeigler, Jr. and Peggy of Irmo, son and daughter-in-law, John A. Zeigler III and Cherie of Lake Carolina; six grandchildren, Russell Gladden, Alex, Nicholas, Chelsea, Daytona Zeigler, and Lauren Z. Brooks; five great-grandchildren; and his older brother, John A. Zeigler, Jr., age 100, of Charleston. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Agape at Kathwood and Agape Hospice.
