Obituary of John Bittner

John McAleer Bittner WADMALAW ISLAND - John (Jack) McAleer Bittner, 95, died August 19, 2012, in the home of their only son John R. (Jack) Bittner and daughter in law Renee. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Dorothy of 71 years. Mr. Bittner served his country well in the US Navy during World War II with a tour in China as well as being involved in the invasion of Okinawa. He retired from the G. C. Murphy Company after 32 years of managing various retail stores in Pennsylvania and was a life member in the Scottish Rite as a 32 Degree Mason. The Bittners were active in the Temple both in Pennsylvania and Palm Bay, Florida where they lived for many years before moving to Columbia where they were faithful members of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Bittner is survived by one sister Betty Ann Caruso (Johnny) grandsons John (Chip) Bittner II (Janet), Eric Bittner, Theodore Bittner, David Roberts, Randall Roberts (Juliet) and many great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. The interment will be held for Mr. Bittner at the graveside of Greenlawn Memorial Park's Serenity Gardens at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2012 officiated by The Reverend Steve McCormick. The Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, 1005 Asbury Drive, Columbia, SC, 29209 with a reception to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, 1005 Asbury Dr., Columbia, SC 29209 in lieu of flowers.
