Obituary of William McKnight

SPRINGDALE-Funeral Services for William Joseph McKnight, 82, lovingly known to his family and friends as "Sonny" and "Beans" will be held at 12pm Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at First Baptist Church of West Columbia. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Rev Lonnie Shull and Pastor Bill Drees will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Harvest Hope Food Bank, 2220 Shop Road Columbia, SC 29201. The family has entrusted Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington with handling the arrangements. Mr. McKnight was the husband of the late Annie Mae Joyner McKnight and retired from SCE&G after 38 years of service. He was member and a Deacon of First Baptist Church of West Columbia for 60 years where he taught Sunday school. He was a gospel singer and an amazing athlete that enjoyed baseball, football, basketball, handball and golf. He was an semi-pro baseball player with the Columbia Jets. Mr. McKnight was an avid Carolina Gamecock fan where he contributed to the Gamecock club. He was a devoted contributor to the Billy Graham association. Surviving are his daughter, Sherri Cafaro of Brevard, NC step-daughter, Marianne Densman of West Columbia, SC; sister, Deloris McKnight Murray of Augusta, GA; brothers, Dr. Heyward McKnight, of Greenville, SC Hugh McKnight of Augusta, GA and Johnnie McKnight of West Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Concetta, Joseph and Sonny Cafaro; great-grandchildren, Sonny Cafaro III, Violetta Jusko, Will Cafaro and one on the way. He is also survived by Larry Taylor who was like a son to him. In addition to his wife he was predeceased by, sister, Marie McKnight and brother, Jimmy McKnight.
