Obituary of Gordon Crews

Gordon Allen Crews COLUMBIA - Funeral services for Gordon Allen Crews, 69, of Columbia will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home. Reverend Steven Vassar and Reverend Clyde Waters will officiate the service. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm at Greenlawn, and burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park will immediately follow the service. Born in Rockingham, NC, Gordon was the son of the late Arthur Jennings Crews and Florence Jordan Crews. He was married to Joyce Ann Hess Crews for 50 years and was a member of the North Columbia Baptist Church. He began his police career with the City of Columbia Police Department as a beat officer in 1967 and worked as a juvenile officer, a motorcycle officer, a homicide investigator, and a traffic officer until his first retirement in 1995. After that, he worked with the Richland County Sheriff's Department in Civil Process, returning to CPD as a background investigator until his second retirement in 2009. Overall, his police career spanned 5 decades and he touched the lives of many officers. Memorials in his honor may be made to the North Columbia Baptist Church, 8140 Gray Fox Blvd., Columbia, SC 29223 or to St. Jude Medical, Inc., 1 St. Jude Medical Drive, St. Paul, MN 55117. Gordon is survived by his wife, Joyce, his son and daughter-in-law, Gordon Arthur and Angela Crews of Huntington, WV, his grandchildren, Garrison and Samantha Crews of Huntington, WV, and his step-grandchildren, Brandon Gilmore of Greensboro, NC, and LCpl Konnor Long of Okinawa, Japan. The family has entrusted Greenlawn Funeral Home with the arrangements.
