Obituary of Ashraf Amanuddin

Mrs. Ashraf B. Amanuddin of 790 McKay Street in Sumter, widow of Dr. Syed Amanuddin, passed away on Friday, September 14, 2012, at NHC in Sumter. She was born on June 19, 1937, a daughter of the late Justice Mir Basith Ali Khan and Rafatunissa Begum of Hyderabad, India. Survivors include her beloved sons Rizwan and Irfan Amanuddin , her sister Sarwath Bari , her brother and sister-in-law Dr. Azam and Asfia Alikhan. She attended Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Bombay (Mumbai) India, graduating with a Master?s degree in Psychiatric Social Work. Based on her merits, she received a scholarship to attend Florida State University where she completed a second Master?s degree in Psychiatric Social Work. She began her career at Nilofore Hospital in Hyderabad India as a social caseworker. After coming to the U.S., she worked at Willard State Hospital in Ovid New York, and then at Tiffin State Hospital, Ohio. In South Carolina, she began working in the Early Childhood Development program then worked at several mental health facilities as a Licensed Medical Social Worker, including Pee Dee Mental Health, William S. Hall Institute and the Continuum of Care where she treated emotionally disturbed children and adolescents, as well as their families. Her life was dedicated to helping others, especially those who were not able to help themselves. She had a passion for music, nature, and was an excellent cook. She enjoyed sharing her wisdom with friends and family and was a pillar of strength for her family and community. Prayers will be held at 2:00 pm, EST on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at Masjid Noor al Huda, 517 Winmet Drive in Columbia, SC. The funeral will be held afterward at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road in Columbia. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations to be made to Masjid Noor al Huda and Masjid al-Muslimin in Columbia SC.
