Obituary of Helen Cooke Mixon

CAYCE: Helen Elizabeth Cooke Mixon was born in Columbia, SC, on March 18, 1917. After several years of declining health, Helen passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2012. She was the daughter of the late Henry Cooke and Chessie Smoak Cooke. Helen was devoted to both of her parents and pleased them by studying music and dance as well as French. She graduated from Columbia High School. She attended Columbia College and finished Columbia Business School. She was the first secretary to the president of The Columbia Opportunity School and worked over 25 years in that position. Helen lived on Elmwood Avenue until she moved to Cayce with her mother. She married Lathan Crisp and after his death she married Bruce Mixon. Helen and Bruce enjoyed researching the Mixon genealogy and published a book for the family. Among Helen's other favorite things was visiting her cousins in the Low Country. Her prized possession and constant companion was her dog "Hot Biscuit". The Phillips family included her in many Sunday meals after church. The children fondly called her "Aunt Helen". Helen was also known for her style in clothing and jewelry. Helen was an active member of the Edwards Memorial Associated Reform Presbyterian church in Cayce, SC. She was a member of the Francis Davis Circle as well as several civic organizations that helped those in need. Helen spent the last five years at The Agape Home. The staff there was devoted to her and spoke often of her kind manner. Her dear friends Douglas and Turnice Pender and L.T. and Joanne Phillips were faithful about visiting and showing Helen their love. Helen is survived by her cousin, Mary Eleanor Bowers of Estill, SC. Helen was predeceased by Bruce Mixon. Pallbearers are L.T. Phillips, Tony Phillips, Jeff Phillips, Larry Phillips, Steven Pender, Mark Pender, and Andrew Green. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 12, 2012, at the Edwards Memorial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend John Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery the family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Edwards Memorial Associated Reform Presbyterian Church, 1600 Summerland Dr., Cayce, SC 29033. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington is assisting the family.
