Obituary of Rodney Derrick

Funeral services for Rodney Duane Derrick, 78, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 22, 2012, at the Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, officiated by Reverend Steve McCormick. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church in the social hall area. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, 1005 Asbury Dr., Columbia, SC 29209 or to Lutheran Hospice, 1505 Blanding St., Columbia, SC 29201. Greenlawn Funeral Home is assisting the family. Mr. Derrick passed away after a short illness at his residence with his family at his side, Thursday, October 18, 2012. Born on January 25, 1934, he was a son of the late Vernon Jacob Derrick and Addie Mae Dowd Derrick. He was described by some as the ?Consummate Southern Gentleman?. He graduated from Lower Richland High School and Presbyterian College. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. Rodney was a member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church; where he served on several committees and was very active in the Men?s Club. He was also a member of the East Columbia Lions Club where he served as treasurer for many years. Rodney was a dedicated bell ringer for the Salvation Army at Christmas time. He retired from the State Printing Company in 1998, after 37 ½ years of service. Surviving is his loving wife of 53 years, Mary Ann Derrick; his daughter, Robin Cox (Mark) of Sumter; his son, Jay Derrick of Columbia; and two grandchildren, Madison and Jacob Cox; sister-in-law, Jean Mitchell; also many nieces and nephews. Mr. Derrick was preceded in death by three sisters, Rachel Jones, Bobbie Baldwin and Audrey Derrick. The family would like to give a special thank you to Loretta and Susan at Lutheran Hospice for their love, care, and support during Rodney?s illness. Also we appreciate the companions from Be Well Home Service that helped Rodney during his final days.
