Obituary of SSG A. Jackson

West Columbia: Hubert A (Bubba) Jackson passed away on October 25, 2012 at Dorn VA Medical Center after a brief illness. Born on March 27, 1946 in Sumter SC, he was the son of the late Herbert and the late Aletha Lewis Jackson. Bubba was a 1964 graduate of Edmunds High School. He served in the US Army, advancing to the rank of Staff Sergeant in under 18 months. He first served as a Combat Engineer with the 1st Engineers, 1st Infantry Division. After Vietnam he was accepted into the Army's elite EOD (Explosives Ordinance Disposal) program and earned his Senior EOD badge. He excelled in classes at Quantico (VA), Red Stone Arsenal (Huntsville, AL) and in several joint services nuclear weapons schools in Albuquerque NM. During his military career he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal w/DVC 60, the Army Commendation Medal with 1st OLC, both the EOD and Senior EOD badges and the Bronze Star with 1st OLC. As a result of his exposure to Agent Orange during his tour of Vietnam, he was also awarded the Order of the Silver Rose, a non-military award. Upon return to civilian life, Bubba received his Associates Degree from Sumter TEC. However, he soon returned to his favorite job, working outside as a heavy equipment operator. His passions in life were fast cars, fishing and traveling. He was most proud of the sailfish and white marlin he caught on his many trips aboard the Tuna Duck. He was always looking forward to his "next trip" with Dan and Mike and landing a "big blue". He is survived by his wife of almost 34 years Joyce N. Jackson of the home, a sister Dorothy Boykin of Sumter, brother-in-law Glenn Nesbitt, sisters-in-law Donna Nesbitt and Sharon Hancock and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He also leaves behind his constant companions, his greyhounds Autumn and Jack. Bubba was preceded in death by his only child, Jeffrey T. Jackson. Graveside services with military honors will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at 10 AM, officiated by Lt. Col. Mike Hardeman. At Bubba's request, there will be no visitation. Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life at a later date. Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Warriors Walk (hospice unit at Dorn VA Medical Center), 6439 Garners Ferry Rd, Columbia SC 29209 or to Greyhound Lifesavers, 100-3 Forum Dr. #150, Columbia SC 29229. The family wishes to thank Dr. Betty Joyce, the team of specialists (who did everything medically possible) and to the wonderful ICU nursing staff at Dorn for their care and compassion during these past 37 days. 2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
