Obituary of Robert Varn

COLUMBIA—A graveside service for Robert E. Varn, 88, of Columbia, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 7, 2012 in Sightler-Varn Cemetery, Dixianna, SC with military honors. The family will receive friends from 11-1 p.m. prior to the service at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Mr. Varn, beloved husband of the late Margaret Free Varn, passed away on Sunday, November 4, 2012. Born in Lexington County, he was the son of the late John Varn and Marie Elizabeth Sightler. He attended Calvary Baptist Church and was a member of ACACIA Masonic Lodge No. 94. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart while serving his county during WWII. Surviving are his sons, Frank C. Van, Sr. (Sarah May) of Columbia and James P. Varn, Sr. (Pam Pearson) of Gilbert; daughter, Roddie Ann McCaulley of Norman, OK; thirteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Varn of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert E. Varn, Jr. and his loving wife, Margaret Free Varn.
