Obituary of Edith Smith Thompson

WEST COLUMBIA: Funeral service for Edith Corley Smith Thompson, 86, will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at Transfiguration Lutheran Church, officiated by Reverend Alexander H. Twedt. Interment will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11 until 12 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Transfiguration Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 2461, Cayce, SC 29033. Mrs. Thompson, widow of HMC Paul Smith and James P. Thompson, passed away Sunday, November 18, 2012. Born in Cayce, SC she was a daughter of the late Earl C. and Claudia Hendrix Corley. She was a charter member of Transfiguration Lutheran Church. Mrs. Thompson was a 1943 graduate of Brookland-Cayce High School; and was retired from Civil Service. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister who enjoyed travel and Bingo. Surviving are her daughter, Carol Smith Sturkie (Wayne) of West Columbia; sons, Joseph Earl Smith of West Columbia and Paul Devon Smith (Gail) of Chuluota, FL; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren; sister, Nancy Sharpe (Charles) of West Columbia; sister-in-law, Harriet Corley of Lexington; brother, Homer Corley (Agnes) of Lexington. Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by Charles and Beverly Corley and Herbert and Betty Ballington and Ralph "Corky" Corley.
