Obituary of Marjorie Simpson Norton

WEST COLUMBIA: A celebration of her life will be held for Marjorie Anne Simpson Norton, 86, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2012, in Celestial Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, officiated by Reverend Wayne Smith, Jr. Memorials may be made in her memory to the Lexington Medical Center Foundation, 2720 Sunset Blvd., West Columbia, SC 29169. Thompson Funeral of West Columbia is assisting the family. Marjorie Anne Simpson Norton, 86, died on Sunday, December 2, 2012. Born in Atlanta, GA on April 5, 1926, she was the daughter of James Augustus Simpson and Frances Jean Craine Simpson. She graduated from Girls High School in 1948 and attended Maryville College; she received her Bachelor of Arts from Presbyterian College in 1952. Mrs. Norton was a member of Theta Epsilon and Alpha Psi Delta Sororities. She served as a social worker and child advocate for the Pickens County Educational Service and also for the Children's Bureau in Columbia. She founded the first volunteer program and auxiliary for Lexington Medical Center, where she served with distinction from 1973 until her retirement. Mrs. Norton was also a longtime member of the Loyal Workers' Class at Brookland United Methodist Church and was a member of the Altrusa Club of Columbia. She was predeceased by her husband, Troy Jerome Norton, and by her sister, Dorothy S. Crowe of Columbus, GA. She is survived by her daughter, Ellen Norton Lesesne of West Columbia, along with three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
