Obituary of Frances McDermott

ELGIN: Frances ?Pat? Meehan McDermott, 89, of Elgin, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2012, at her home. Born Monday, August 27, 1923 in Bronx, NY, but raised in Forest Hills, NY she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Frances (Luber) Meehan. Mrs. McDermott was a long standing member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Columbia, which she and her husband joined in 1971, and was a member of the Settlers and Women?s Walsh Guild. She attended the USC and Winthrop University, and was employed and retired with the State of South Carolina Health and Human Services as a secretary. Mrs. McDermott was an avid Bridge player, loved to travel and read, and also volunteered at the State Museum. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard McDermott, with whom she shared union of more than 54 years; sister, Jean; and a grandson, Michael. Mrs. McDermott is survived by one daughter, Jeannette Tyler (Paul); three sons, William (Jane), John and Larry McDermott; three grandsons, Paul, Curtis and Stephen; three great grandchildren; as well as many loving friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 20, 2012, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 3700 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205, with Father Matthew Gray officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park ? Serenity Gardens. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19, 2012, in Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209.
