Obituary of James Courtney

A homegoing service celebrating the life of SGM James D. Courtney, (US Army, Ret.) of Eastover will be held at 12 p.m. Monday, December 24, 2012 in Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Full military honors and interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of the service on Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Longcreek Church of Christ in Mr. Courtney?s memory. On-line condolences may be sent to www.greenlawn-columbia.com. The family has entrusted Greenlawn Funeral Home with the arrangements. Mr. Courtney departed this earthly life on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He the son of the late Henry and Pinkie Hannah Courtney. Mr. Courtney retired from the United States Army as Sergeant Major after 30 years of a distinguished career and dedicated service to our country. SGM Courtney served two tours in Korea, a tour in Vietnam and he was awarded numerous decorations, medals, badges, citations, and campaign ribbons. After retirement from the United States Army, SGM Courtney was the proud owner and operator of Kan Klean Janitorial for over 30 years. He was a devoted member of Longcreek Church of Christ. SGM Courtney was predeceased by a daughter, Grace Courtney and his seven siblings. Those left to cherish his lifetime of memories are his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Mrs. Julie M. Courtney; his daughters, Angela C. Smith and Cortina C. Hammond; his sons, Daniel L. Courtney and Derwin L. (Vanessa) Courtney; 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends that will miss him dearly.
