Obituary of John Benton King

John Benton "J.B." King, Sr. passed away on Friday, December 21, 2012. He was the son of the late James Alton and Eula Mae Stokes King. He was born in Brunswick, Georgia May 5, 1930. He was a graduate of Chicora High, Charleston Heights, in 1949. Benton attended USC and was a member of the USC Letterman Association, where he formerly played third base for the USC Baseball Team. J.B. began working with Western Electric in 1952, transferring to Southern Bell in 1964 and retired in 1991 with 39 years in the Equipment Engineering Department as a supervisor. He was a member of the Pioneers of America. He was a member of the Episcopal Church for 56 years and attended St. John's Episcopal Church on Wheat Street. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alice Dellinger King. Two sons, Johnny (Linda) King and Ronnie (Melissa) King of Columbia; one daughter, Kathy (John) Sutton of Sumter; seven grandchildren, Christie, Lisa, and Kyle King, Jason and Tyler Sutton, and Harley and Rylee King; one brother, Robert N. King (Jean) of North Charleston and one sister Francis Graham (Edwin) of Austin, TX, along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, James Adron King. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, December 23, 2012 in Greenlawn Memorial Park, officiating will be The Reverend J. Fletcher Montgomery and The Reverend Scott Fleischer. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Greenlawn Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers will be James O. Price, Philip R. Klugh, Kyle M. King, Jason M. Sutton, Tyler B. Sutton and John M. Sutton.
