Obituary of Jack Stewart

Mr. Jack James Stewart, 92, of West Columbia passed away January 19, 2013 at his home at Oakleaf Retirement Village after a brief illness. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, January 23, 2012 at 11am at Thompson Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel, 200 State Street West Columbia SC 29169; Reverend James Young will be officiating. Interment will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Memorials may be made in Mr. Stewart's honor to a charity of one's choice. Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia is handling the arrangements. Mr. Stewart was born December 29, 1920 in Croswell, Michigan, a son of the late George Sidney Stewart and Verna Grandy Stewart. He graduated from Croswell High School in 1938 and worked at the local pickle factory until he was drafted into the Army in December 1942. e served u Kansas, Mississiooi and in Europe with Company C, 301st Infantry Regiment of the 94th He served in Kansas, Mississippi and in Europe with Company C, 301st Infantry Regiment of the 94th Infantry Division. He was wounded in action near Sinz, Germany and was discharged from active duty in December 1945. He re-enlisted in 1948 and served in Japan and Korea where he was again wounded in action. He later became an instructor for the Hawk Missile School at Fort Bliss, Texas and later transferred to Butzbach, Germany, where he served until his retirement in 1965. Mr. Stewart married Lula Herlong Purvis on August 2, 1950 to whom he was a devoted husband until her passing in 2008. Jack enjoyed bird watching, golf, researching family history and spending time with his grandchildren. He was an avid Carolina Gamecock fan who stuck with them through the bad times and the good. In addition to his wife and his parents he is also predeceased by his sisters, Eleanor Stewart and Valeria Bartley all of Croswell Michigan. Surviving are his daughter, Nancy Cain; son-in-law, Bernie Cain; grandsons, Matthew and Joshua Cain and numerous nieces and nephews.
