Obituary of Ruby Hopkins

Ruby Bradley Hopkins, wife of the late Carl R. Hopkins, died Wednesday February 13, 2013 at age 99. Born December 13, 1913 on the family farm in Franklin County, Georgia, the oldest of 13 children of Warren Cash and Eleanor Hulsey Bradley, Ruby always said 13 was her lucky number. Ruby & Carl lived in the Columbia area most of their lives and in West Columbia since 1956 and were very active in their church, Northside Baptist. A homemaker all her life, Ruby enjoyed making delicious meals for her family and friends (her coconut, lemon and chocolate meringue pies were locally famous), sewing, caring for her grandchildren, gardening with Carl and camping with their friends, "The Drifters". At Christmas, she became as excited as a child, and often had her Christmas tree up shortly after Halloween! Ruby is survived by her son Lowell K. Hopkins and wife Riecy of Columbia, daughter Lynda H. Day and husband Don of Lexington, predeceased by oldest son Duane W. Hopkins of Florida. Also surviving are daughter-in-law Elisabeth H. Hopkins of Gainesville, Florida; grandchildren, Vonda H. Largent of Atlanta, Pamela H. DeLoach (Harry) of Columbia, Kimberly H. Weiss (Michael), of Aurora, Colorado, Gail H. Coulson-Kreider of Gainesville, Florida, Tanya H. Carmichael (Andy) of Palatka, Florida, Michael P. Kuffel of Charleston, SC and Amy L. Kuffel of West Columbia; 12 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved son-in-law Richard M. Kuffel. Her surviving siblings are Thomas Bradley of West Columbia, Dorthia Roberts, Frances Sewell (Ralph), W. C. Bradley, Jr. (Anne), Millard Bradley (Barbara) all of Georgia, having been predeceased by seven of her brothers and sisters, with whom she is enjoying a grand reunion along with her dear parents, beloved Carl, and many friends in Heaven. Her 99 years on earth were rich and full, and her memory will be cherished by those she leaves behind. The family would like to thank Lutheran Hospice, especially nurse Paige and Chaplain Vicki for their comforting care during Ruby's last months, as well as The Heritage @ Lowman where Ruby resided since 2010. Memorials may be made to Northside Baptist Church, Lutheran Hospice, or the charity of one's choice. Funeral services will be held at 2pm Monday, February 18, 2013 at Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Officiating will be Reverends Rocky Purvis and Lonnie Shull. Burial will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1-2pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
