Obituary of CSM Thomas Lee Fields, Sr.

COLUMBIA: CSM Thomas Lee Fields, Sr. US Army retired, 78, passed away March 7, 2013. Born in Galax, VA, November 29, 1934, he was a son of the late Pastor Chancey B. Fields and Eva (Lear) Fields. CSM Fields served 28 years in the US Army, and 9 years with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). He served tours in Korea, Germany and two combat tours in Vietnam. Highly decorated, his awards include, the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Air Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal and the Legion of Merit. He was a Noble of the Mystic Shrine in Jamil Temple, of Columbia. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and the Accent and Accepted Scottish Rite, Lodge 402 Dutch Fork. He was a dedicated member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Jama Lee Fields, and Edna C. Brewer; as well as three brothers, David D., J.C. and Samuel J. Fields. He is survived by his wife of 40 wonderful years, Carolyn (Kelly) Fields; four children, Wanda S. Fields, Thomas L. Fields, Jr. (Linda), Carolyn Ann Wells (Mark) and Leland Barry Glen; ten grandchildren, Mary McKenzie Mason, Kelly Kelsey Mason, Lindsey Lee Mason, Jessica Wells, Raygen Wells, Adam E. Fields, Eric T. Stack, Austin T. Stack, Byron L. Fields and Olivia N. Fields; and five great grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister Mary M. Bartlett (Jack); brother-in-law, Jim Brewer; and sister-in-laws, Shirley and Rosa Mae Fields. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at 1:00 P.M., in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1715 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210, with Pastor George Head officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M., on Monday, March 11, 2013, at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209.
