Obituary of Etheredge Sturkie

SOUTH CONGAREE: Funeral services for Etheredge D. Sturkie "E.D.", 84, of South Congaree, will be held Friday, March 15, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Ebenezer Pentecostal Holiness Church, South Congaree. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends and family from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, SC 29073. E.D. died Monday, March 11, 2013. Born on February 9, 1929 in Bull Swamp, SC, he was the son of the late Charlie E. and Nettie L. Sturkie. He was a Licensed Residential Builder and in 1991 he was the featured builder in the Builder/Architect Magazine. He served in the United States Marine Corp. from 1945-1949. He was a member of the Greater S.C. Home Builders Association and served on the Board of Directors for many years. He served on Lexington County Advisory Board. He was Mayor of the town of South Congaree from 1964-1968. After his retirement, he loved farming, growing beautiful fruits and vegetables, which he loved sharing with friends and family. He was dearly loved and respected by everyone that met him. He was a kind, patient and caring man. He always offered help to those in need. His home was always open and loved having visitors. He was a wonderful husband, the best daddy, granddaddy and great-granddaddy. He was very proud of all his family. We will always cherish his guidance, love and respect. He leaves behind his wife Hilda of 62 years; daughters, Deborah S. (Ted) Huff, Cheryl (Mike) Boyd; sons, Wade Sturkie and Pete (Sheryl) Sturkie; eight grandchildren, Danielle Sturkie, Bradley (Shannon) Sturkie, Jessica (Brian) Autrey, Joseph (Staci) Boyd, Teddy (Nina) Huff, Lindsey Huff, Jack Smith and Josh (Sally) Gabrovic; six great-grandchildren, Cameron Sturkie, Abbey, Maria and Gregory Huff, Jacob Boyd and Makayla Autrey. He is survived by brothers, James W. Sturkie, Brice L. Sturkie, Charles D. Sturkie, Carl O. Sturkie and sisters, Betty Rish and Carolyn Henderson. He was predeceased by a brother, Albert Sturkie and sisters, Christolee Jones and Patricia Sturkie.
