Obituary of Hazel Stilwell

Funeral Services for Hazel G. Stilwell, of Cayce, will be held Monday, March 18, 2013 at 11am at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, 1000 B Avenue, West Columbia SC 29169. Officiating will be the Reverend Dr. Charles Easley and the Reverend Glenn Boland. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:45 am until the hour of service in the sanctuary. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington is assisting the family. Hazel died Friday, March 15, 2013. Born on January 4, 1916 in Statesville, NC she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Nellie Green. She was predeceased by her husband William E. Stilwell, Sr. She is survived by two sons, William E. Stilwell, Jr. (Susan) and Ralph D. Stilwell (Barbara); four grandchildren, Todd Stilwell and Wes Stilwell (Marti), Kathryn Cash (Brent) and Meredith Amick (Craig); seven great-grandchildren, Ella, Cole, Samantha, and Liam Stilwell, Blake and Shelby Cash and Will Amick. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Garrison (David) and a brother-in-law, Roscoe Stilwell. A devout Christian, Hazel was an active member of Mt Tabor Lutheran Church, West Columbia where she regularly attended worship, Sunday school, Bible Studies, WELCA, and served on the Service Ministry Committee as long as health permitted. She also enjoyed the St Andrews Shepherd Center and the Tuesday Night Group and working in her yard. She was an avid reader who in her 70's and 80's became a writer for the pleasure of her family. She also excelled in crocheting. In addition to values of faith, character, and integrity, Hazel and Bill Sr. encouraged their sons to accept the challenge of higher education as a doorway to the future, Hazel and Bill had great love for and took great pride in their children and grandchildren. Hazel graduated from Statesville High School and from Mitchell College with an associate degree in business. She worked in medical records at Davis hospital, and NC Baptist Hospital. During WWII she served the Department of the Army as supervisor for stenographic and clerical employees. When her children started public school she became secretary to the director of the Columbia Hospital. She concluded her full time career as a Budget Analyst at Fort Jackson where she regularly received superior evaluations for work performance. After retirement she worked part time as a medical transcriptionist at Baptist Medical Center. In her 70's and 80's Hazel served as a volunteer typist for Grace Lutheran Church in Gilbert for twelve years. The family gives special thanks to the staff at LEC-Carroll Campbell Place for the loving and conscientious care Hazel received there. The family also is thankful for friends and church family who have kept Hazel in their love and prayers.
