Obituary of Sarah Jones

WEST COLUMBIA: Sarah Ross Jones of West Columbia, went to be with her Lord on Friday, April 5, 2013. Born in Columbia, SC, on March 12, 1919, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Maisie Ross. She spent her entire life in Richland and Lexington counties and never understood why anyone would ever wish to go any place else. She attended Wardlaw Junior High and Columbia High School. Following the death of her husband in 1962, she worked at Compton's Department Store in West Columbia for several years. Her happiest days, however, were spent at the First Baptist Church of West Columbia Day Care, which she co-founded in 1972 and co-directed for twenty years. A member of the First Baptist Church of West Columbia for over sixty years, she was for many years a faithful nursery worker. Her favorite thing to do was to hold and love babies. In addition to serving her Lord, she was a vigilant prayer warrior. Her children and grandchildren always knew they were included in her daily prayers. Sarah is survived by three children: Julian Jones, Jr., Dan Jones (Pat) and Becky Dodson (Larry), nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Julian Jones, Sr., a daughter-in-law, Margaret Jones, and her six brothers and sisters: John Ross, Jr., Pinckney Ross, Mary Singletary, Marguerite Winn, Betty Almond and Thomas Ross. The family will receive friends at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, State Street, on Sunday, April 7 from 6-8 p.m. Graveside services will be held in Elmwood Cemetery on Monday, April 8 at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be given to First Baptist of West Columbia, P.O. Box 4898, West Columbia, SC 29171 or to the children's charity of one's choice. The family wishes to thank the tireless staff of Lexington Extended Care, particularly those on Ivy Road for the loving care they gave to Ms. Sarah.
