Obituary of Gordon Cockrell

COLUMBIA: Funeral service for Gordon Phillip Cockrell, 76, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013, at Salem United Methodist Church, officiated by Dr. Larry Salter and Reverend Carl Clary. Interment will be at 4 p.m. in Travis Park Cemetery, Saluda, SC. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Saturday evening at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church. Mr. Cockrell passed away Friday, April 05, 2013. Born in Saluda, SC, he was a son of the late Gordon Patterson Cockrell and Eunice Rowe Cockrell. He graduated from Saluda High School. After high school he coached a semi-pro football team in Lexington. He attended Newberry College; and served in the U. S. Army National Guard. He was a longtime member of the Jamil Temple. Mr. Cockrell worked for United Insurance Company for many years and later Jim Moore Cadillac. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of nine years, Patricia A. Cockrell of Chapin; son, Gordon Patrick Cockrell and wife, Janice of Lexington; sister, Faye Crawford of Saluda; grandchildren, Christian and Stephanie.
