Obituary of Harriet Felkel

COLUMBIA—Harriet Osteen Felkel, 76, died Sunday, April 7, 2013. Born in Sumter, Ms. Felkel was the daughter of the late Heyward Lewis Osteen and Myrtis Ginn Osteen. Ms. Felkel graduated from Edmunds High School in 1954 and Columbia Hospital School of Nursing in 1957. She was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church of Columbia. She was also a lifetime member of the AT&T Telephone Pioneers, Daughters of the American Revolution-Sumter Home Chapter and retired from the American Board of Occupational Health Nurses Association. She felt blessed to enjoy her field of nursing for over 55 years in several capacities to include Office Manager at Columbia Surgical Associates, the first Occupational Health Nurse for Providence Hospital and Southern Bell/AT&T. After retiring from Southern Bell/AT&T, she continued working as a Certified Case Manager for Crawford & Company. Ms. Felkel believed in giving back to the community and helping others. Throughout her career, along with raising her family, volunteering was important to her. She volunteered her time and nursing skills at the Columbia Free Clinic. She was also the Supervising RN for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Agency providing health screenings for Project Readiness. At Ebenezer Lutheran Church she served in the following roles: an Adult Program Coordinator, a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Altar Guild and Chairperson of the Evangelism Board and Worship Ministry. Ms. Felkel's heart has been her family. She has been a loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt and grandmother. She loved her children unconditionally and cherished her precious grandchildren. She has been a special friend to many and will be missed by all who loved her and those she loved and served. The family will receive visitors from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, April 11, 2013, Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, SC. There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2013 in Sumter Cemetery, 700 Oakland Avenue, Sumter. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Newberry Boys Farm, PO Box 713, Newberry, SC 29108 or First Baptist Church of Sumter, P.O. Box 867, Sumter, SC 29151 in Memory of Harriet O. Felkel / Myrtis Ginn Osteen for their Bi-Centennial. Surviving are her daughters, Susan Long Herndon and husband, Jeff of Columbia and Patricia Long Miller and husband, Thad of Lexington; brother, Heyward Lewis Osteen, Jr. of Sacramento, CA, David Milton Osteen and wife, Georgia of Lugoff; grandchildren, Kellie Herndon, Michelle Herndon, Blake Miller and Landon Miller. She was preceded by death by her husband, Lewis W. Felkel, Jr.; son, Donald O. Long, Jr. and parents.
