Dr. Lemuel Allen Patterson posted a condolence
Wednesday, May 8, 2013
The social vehicles provided by Mr. Allen Savitz enabled thousands of Abbevillians to become citizens with an integrated social mindset through entertainment at Grandpa's Gin Mill and bringing music on vinyl 33 1/3 albums 45 records from artists in NYC, Motown, and Memphis too. Concert tickets were sold at his record shop to the Greenville Memorial Auditorium for soul shows. Without his fairness and vision, Abbeville would not have had a window to know of the world. Regards for a pioneer and a visionary. Thank you and strengths of payers to the family,
Sincerely,
Dr. Lemuel Allen Patterson, Savannah

I am so sorry to hear of Allen's death. I have very good memories of Allen from my childhood in Abbeville. When I was ten, he told me I had to buy this new record that had just come out. I listened to it in his record shop and immediately bought Save The Last Dance For Me by the Drifters. I still have it. Abbeville was better and a much more interesting place to live because we had Allen there.

I met Allen when I was attending USC. We were both in the Theatre department and he taught a public speaking class I was required to take. Although I was not scared to perform in a play, I was terrified of giving a speech. Allen quickly realized I was horrified and bonded with me by explaining why actors are more frightened of public speaking than they are performing. We instantly became friends, and he taught me a few tricks I have used throughout my career.
I also remember the time Mims had a dinner/slumber party and about 10 people sat around talking and laughing while I cleverly placed one of her many hats on each person's head. Allen kept talking and rocking in his chair as though it was perfectly natural to have a woman's hat on while in his pajamas in a room full of people.
So many laughs and so many good times. Thank you, Allen, for gracing me with your friendship, your smiles, and your wonderful sense of humor. I am blessed to have known you.

Allen introduced me to my partner of 25 years, Wil Bradberry. When Allen opened Strider's Concert Hall in 1984, Columbia was able to see REM, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Joan Jett, Slayer and Night Ranger before they were Top 40. Thank you Allen for filling my life with love and music!
