Obituary of Marion Smith

WEST COLUMBIA—A graveside service for Mr. Marion Jackson "Coach" Smith, 91, of West Columbia, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013 in Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Scott Crede. Pallbearers will be Marion J. Smith III, Jason A. Smith, Seth N. Smith, Ric Reed, Corey Hanley, Jason A. Smith, Jr. and Ryan Belger. Honorary Pallbearers will be Norbert Palecek, Wynne Price, Joel Price, Robert Slice and Tim Nunley. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Memorials may be made to Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church of West Columbia, 3011 Leaphart Road, West Columbia, SC 29169 or Northside Baptist Church, SC's "Forward" Campaign, 4337 Sunset Blvd., Lexington, SC 29072. Mr. Smith, beloved husband of the late Sara Eleanor Smith, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2013. Born in Littleton, he was the son of the late Eldridge C. and Martha Proveaux Smith. He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force, serving in WWII and a member of Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church. He was a longtime Dixie Youth Coach in West Columbia and an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troup 356. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Surviving are his sons, Marion "Buster" Smith, Jr. (Pamela) of St. Matthews; Glenn A. Smith (Vickie) of Lexington; six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Marvin H. Smith of Lexington.
