Obituary of Vera K. Cockrell

Vera Kathryn "Kay" (Horton) Cockrell passed away, Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at her home. Born Tuesday, October 14, 1924, in Bethune, Kershaw County, she was a daughter of the late Clyde and Florence (Barfield) Horton. Kay graduated high school in Bethune, and later attended Columbia Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1950. In her professional life she served as a Nursing Instructor and Supervisor. Kay was also a longtime member of Incarnation Lutheran Church. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, T. Davis Taylor in 1962 and her second husband, Robert Earl Cockrell in 2012. She is survived by her siblings, Nancy Newcome (Roy) of Columbia, Robert E Horton (Joyce) of Lugoff, Jimmy Horton (Hazil) of Bethune and Joyce Ann McClean (Kenneth) of Blythewood; as well as several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Incarnation Lutheran Church, 3005 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205, with Rev. Dr. Mary W. Anderson Rev. Dr. James C. Parham, III, officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service in the parlor at Incarnation Lutheran. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Care by Generations with special thanks to Veria Clark, Dr. Dale Hamrick, Palmetto Health Hospice, Mary Kehl, Donald Cockrell and many friends and family for their service and support over the years. The family requests that donations be made to either Incarnation Lutheran Church, or to a charity of one's choice.
