Obituary of Robert Newton Shealy

COLUMBIA-Robert Newton Shealy, Sr., 90, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2013 at his home in Columbia. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 15, 2013 in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Park Street Baptist Church, 2204 Park Street, Columbia, SC 29201 or one's choice. Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia is in charge. Born in West Columbia, March 3, 1923, he was a son of the late Harry Newton and Mable Hilton Shealy. He was loved by his family who loved his cooking, he will truly be missed. He graduated from Brookland-Cayce High School in 1940. He enlisted in 1943 in the U.S. Army, where he served as a Military Police Officer. After WWII, Mr. Shealy graduated from Clemson University in 1951 where he received his Bachelor's degree. He retired from Mount Vernon Mills after many years of dedicated service and was a member of Park Street Baptist Church. Surviving Mr. Shealy are his beloved wife of 70 years, Myrtle Clyburn Shealy; children, Robert Newton Shealy, Jr. (Sandra) of Chapin, Margie Shealy Clough (Bubba) of Columbia and Thomas Clyburn Shealy of Chapin. He was known as PaPa to his six grandchildren, Robyn S. Bellinger, Robert N. Shealy, III "Tripp" (Leigh), Andrea C. Lanham, Kimberly C. Laney (Jeff), Aaron T. Shealy (Virginia) and Stephen R. Shealy; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Shealy and Jean S. Langley; and one great-grandson, Ashley Reed Shealy.
