Obituary of John L. Phillips

WEST COLUMBIA—A memorial service for John L. Phillips, Jr., 72, of West Columbia, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at Thompson Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel. Rev. David Anderson will officiate. The family will greet friends following the service. Memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Church Music Ministries, 2003 Charleston Hwy., Cayce, SC 29033. Mr. Phillips, beloved husband of Cathy S. Phillips, passed away on Monday, September 9, 2013. Born in Orangeburg, he was a son of the late John L. Phillips, Sr. and Helen Jones Phillips. He was a longtime area resident and member of Trinity Baptist Church. He worked over 40 years with State Government, retiring from SC Vocational Rehabilitation. He was a graduate of USC class of 1973. He shared his love for God, Church, his family, all type of music and the USC Baseball team with his friends and colleagues. Surviving in addition to his wife of 29 years, Cathy S. Phillips of West Columbia; sons, Joshua B. Phillips and John W. Phillips both of West Columbia; sisters, Jewel Blume of Batesburg, Peggy Dube of Lexington and Shirley Emmons of Forked River, NJ; brother, Eddie C. Phillips (Debbie) of Lexington; aunt, Sara Jones of Sumter; sister-in-law, Janice Sprouse Elkins (Dan) of Salt Lake City, Utah, along with numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jean Phillips Hughes and Beverly Phillips Belk. The family would like thank the staff at Heartstrings Hospice Care and Providence Hospital for their kind and attentive care.
