Obituary of Vernon Roberts

CHAPIN—Funeral services for Vernon Roberts, 77, of Chapin, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, September 23, 2013 at Chapin Baptist Church. Rev. Philip Vaughn will officiate. Burial will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chapin Baptist Church, 950 Old Lexington Hwy., Chapin, SC 29036, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Donor Services, PO Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202 or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Mr. Roberts, beloved husband of 56 years, to Mary Gunter Roberts, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2013. Born in Horry County, he was a son of the late James Edward Roberts and Minnie Lee Williams Roberts. He was an active member of Chapin Baptist Church and served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He worked at Arcade Barber Shop and Humphries Barber Shop until he started his own business, Roberts Barber Service in 1972 in Chapin. He worked as a barber for 56 years and was a devoted Gamecock fan. Surviving in addition to his loving wife, Mary Roberts whom he married February 23, 1957; sons, Jim Roberts (Ellen), Rick Roberts (Robin); daughter, Kathryn Hubenthal (Doug); grandchildren, Jamie Roberts (Julie), Andy Roberts (Nancy), Nick Hubenthal and Mary Amanda Roberts; brother, Bernie Roberts and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four sisters and six brothers.
